Pairing Solar with an EV Charger: What to Plan For

Adding an EV charger after solar is already installed is common — but it changes your system's math. Here's what to account for.

A Level 2 EV charger typically adds somewhere in the range of 2,500–4,000 kWh of annual electricity demand for an average driver — a meaningful jump in household usage that existing solar systems sized before the EV purchase usually weren't designed to fully offset.

If you already have solar and are adding a charger, the honest starting point is checking whether your existing system has room to expand, or whether you're accepting that the EV's charging will draw more from the grid than your other appliances do. Neither is wrong, but it's worth knowing which situation you're in before you assume the EV is 'running on solar.'

If you're planning solar and an EV purchase together, sizing the system around your anticipated EV usage from the start — rather than your current usage alone — avoids the expansion conversation later and is usually more cost-effective than adding capacity in two separate projects.

Charging schedule matters as much as system size. A charger set to run whenever the car is plugged in (often overnight) will draw primarily from the grid regardless of your solar system's size, since panels aren't producing at night. Scheduling charging for daytime hours when production is highest — or pairing with a battery that stores daytime production for evening use — is what actually increases the share of charging powered by your own system.
